Task 2- Audience and Exhibition

Look up top grossing films of 2015 - Write down top five and their producers/exhibitors and when they came out.

All of them were released around on the school holidays, such as the Christmas, Summer and Easter holidays. This is a good marketing technique as then more people are free and children/teenagers are also able and more likely to go and see the films which are in the cinema at that time, as that is when people are less likely to be preoccupied with work and school. This gives people more times in the day to see these films.

Also all of these films have been released on general release and this means they were available to see in all the cinemas around the country and therefore have no restrictions. This meant that more people are able to see the film which therefore lead to a greater income for the films and companies distributing.

All these films are big blockbuster films so they were all able to have large production budgets. Also through them being blockbusters/ mainstream films it meant that more people are likely to see it because they don't have to think too much about what they are watching in comparison to the independent films, this gives the public a greater chance of escapism.

Also as all of these films are large budget blockbusters, they are all distributed by a Big Six company, e.g. Disney and Universal. This is because mainly only enormous companies such as the ones in the Big Six are able to afford the budget which is needed in order to make these films.

Nearly all of them have the Big Six company as the producer of the film too because the franchise for these films is under them, however Star Wars was co produced with Lucas Film as he was originally the owner of Star Wars.

All but one of these films are sequels this shows that when marketing they were able to just use there other films and fans of their other films in order to be popular as with the sequels for example with Avengers and Star Wars the films are already an extremely well known franchise, with lots of merchandise etc. So people would be excited about the film, want to go see it and therefore see the film before trailers or even posters come out.

I would say that 3 out of the top 5 films were aimed at younger audiences because through doing that the film is able to have a larger amount of people coming to watch the film, especially since most young people don't or can't go and see the films because they are are too young so their parents take them and maybe even their friends so through the films appealing to young people the secondary audience would be much larger than it could've been.

Task 1- Cinema Habits

Cinema plays a vital role in films income and takings, however as technology develops this could be starting to change. So to see how audience consumes film we did a survey on the target market audience that cinema's try to appeal to ages 15-25.

This shows that in our results the top answers were:

  1. Most people go to the cinema every month or every couple of months.
  2. Most people hear about films through trailers and social media.
  3. The top refreshment/ food that people take in when watching the cinema is sweets.
  4. All but 1 person prefers to see films in 2D over 3D.
  5. Again all but 1 person watches films online.
  6. Watching films illegally was quite spread the majority said yes, but it was also even between no and sometimes.
  7. More people prefer to watch films at the cinema over at home.
  8. Nearly all people go and see films due to specific actors starring in it.
  9. Nearly all (excluding 2) go to the cinema with their friends.
